I disagree with the analysis in Tom’s column. It seems to me his correct bet range is 801 to 7,200. This wins if he gets it right, no matter what Beth does including double up. But it also wins if both of them get it wrong, provided she bet at least 3,601 as she should (because he will have at least 1,200 left and she will not).
Indeed, if anyone should be told to bet everything it is Beth, since she cannot win without getting the answer right unless Tom bets stupidly.
In Tom’s shoes I would go low, with 801, since it is a subject I’m bad at.
Thanks for catching that – that was an issue with the formatting of my calculator. I meant to change that to 800 even.
