A good friend – and LearnedLeague rookie-rundle champion – joins me on Wednesday’s episode, as Fred Vaughn looks to break our drought of four-timers.
This was a well-fought game – but the wagering situation is going to cause some headaches.

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:
| THE EMMYS |
Not good news for either of us on the video.
First-order calculations
Colin has to go big to cover Fred (who is almost certainly not wagering everything, but still – do you want to take that chance?).
Bianca probably needs to get it right and wager something, but that’s not as cut-and-dried as we’d like it to be.

| 3,400 | 9,400 | 10,000 | 1,400 | 5,800 | |

Second-order calculations
I guess Colin could go for 8,801, so Fred and Bianca should close their ranges a bit.

Zero wagers
Score differences:
Colin and Fred: 600
Colin and Bianca: 4,200
Fred and Bianca: 3,600
| Fred |
Colin |
Bianca | |||
| 10,600 | 11,200 | 7,000 | |||
| FIRST-ORDER | SECOND-ORDER | COVER ZERO | |||
| min | max | min | max | min | max |

| 3,400 | 3,600 | 2,800 | 4,200 | 5,800 | |
| 600 | 1,400 | ||||
The 4,800 amount for Fred is to cover the potential 4,200 maximum wager from Colin.
What actually happened
| Fred | Colin | Bianca | |||
| 10,600 | 11,200 | 7,000 | |||
| 5,500 | 10,200 | 4,201 | |||

| min | max | min | max | min | max |
| 3,401 | 3,599 | 10,001 | 4,201 | 4,599 | |
| 4,801 | 7,199 | 2,801 | 4,199 | 1,401 | |
| 599 | 5,799 | ||||
Good wagers all around – and Fred takes his fourth win! He now has $65,700 and sits atop the ToC leaderboard.
Will he hit five tomorrow?

Colin here; glad you approved of my wager, although obviously it was not exactly controversial. Wanted you to know that I read your blog extensively in the months before taping, although talking to the rest of the contestants in the green room it was clear that in this day and age, nearly everyone does once they find out that they’re going to be on “Jeopardy!”
By the way, here’s that New Yorker piece that Jacob was struggling to remember:
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/08/31/little-boxes
It was easy for me to find because, I, too, had just read it, and I spent the whole time up there desperately wishing I could call it to mind!
Thanks for coming by, Colin! Glad I could be of service.
Sorry things didn’t work out – I know just how intense the pressure under the lights can be, and how that is the shortest 30 seconds in the world. You played a great game, and I hope you enjoyed the experience!
