Tonight, I’m grateful my dad doesn’t like nice scotch.

Here are our scores heading into Final:

Dylan

Parson

Austin

Yates

Barbara

Gao

13,500 10,600 7,800

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:

HISTORIC LEGISLATION

Make sure you figure out what each player should wager before watching tonight’s video.

First-order calculations

Austin is ever-so-slightly in Stratton’s Dilemma, meaning he has to pick between covering Barbara and staying above a lockout by Dylan.

Dylan
Austin
Barbara
13,500 10,600 7,800
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
7,700 5,000* 2,000
4,800
2,100

Second-order calculations

If Barbara is scared of a smaller wager from either of the players in front of her, she could be justified in wagering everything, but I don’t like it.

Dylan
Austin
Barbara
13,500 10,600 7,800
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
7,700 5,000* 2,000
4,800
2,100 3,700 800 3,600*

Zero wagers

Score differences:
Dylan and Austin: 2,900
Dylan and Barbara: 5,700
Austin and Barbara: 2,800

Dylan
Austin
Barbara
13,500 10,600 7,800
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
7,700 11,400 5,000* 2,000
2,900 4,800
2,100 3,700 800 5,700*

Then we add a dollar to the minimum wagers, and subtract a dollar from the maximum wagers.

What actually happened

Dylan Austin Barbara
13,500 10,600 7,800
5,700 8,000 7,800
19,200 18,600 15,600
min max min max min max
7,701 11,399 10,600* 1,999
2,901 4,799
2,101 3,699 799 7,800

Those of you who have watched for a while will remember this rule: if you have to get it right to have a shot at winning, you might as well wager everything. Austin learned why tonight.

Dylan ekes out his second victory for a total of $24,599.

The Final Jeopardy! clue

HISTORIC LEGISLATION
IN 1820 JEFFERSON CALLED THIS BILL “THE KNELL OF THE UNION”, SAYING “A GEOGRAPHICAL LINE… WILL NEVER BE OBLITERATED”

    Two comments:

The Jewish holiday today is Yom Kippur (you were 9 days off).

I think Barbara was justified in going all-in because your recommended $2,000 maximum wager doesn’t cover a zero wager by Austin (which is plausible that he’d bet that if he’s not concerned about covering Dylan’s zero wager and wants to take the “small” option).

    • Thanks for catching that mistake – guess the scotch had gone to my head.

I was wavering between orange and pink for Barbara. Too bad I don’t give half-colors!

Do you have any idea why the College Championship and the Teen Tournament didn’t appear in Season 31?
