Will Kyle keep her hot thumb to win a third Jeopardy! match? Or will the Sony meat loaf do her in?

I would have loved to see some bigger wagers on those $800-level Daily Doubles in the second round, but I guess it worked out ok for her.

Kyle

Webb

Russell

Allen

Jennifer

Sterling

12,400 8,600 7,800

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:

FAMOUS BRITS

Both challengers are alive.

First-order calculations

If Kyle’s wrong with the lockout wager, she’ll fall just behind Jennifer’s pre-Final total…

Kyle
Russell
Jennifer
12,400 8,600 7,800
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
4,800 7,000* 200
1,000

Second-order calculations

…which could lead to some mind games. Jennifer could wager for the win, but only if she thinks either Kyle or Russell will get tricky.

Kyle
Russell
Jennifer
12,400 8,600 7,800
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
4,800 7,000* 200
600
2,800 7,400*

I have no reason to believe they will, but…

What actually happened

Kyle Russell Jennifer
12,400 8,600 7,800
4,801 8,599 7,800
17,201 1 0
min max min max min max
4,801 8,600 199
599
2,799 7,800

…Jennifer apparently did. At least she went for broke, as she should have.

Kyle has now won 3 games and $45,200, and will look to break our drought of 4-timers tomorrow. This makes three weeks in a row that the Friday game has seen a three-time returning champion, with Amelia Hershberger and Steve Belding coming up short previously.

The Final Jeopardy! clue

FAMOUS BRITS
GROWING UP, HER FAVORITE LITERARY HEROINE WAS JO MARCH; THEY SHARED A NAME & A HOT TEMPER & THEY BOTH WANTED TO WRITE

Correct response: Show

Tonight’s commentary is more proof that what’s hard or confusing for one person is easy for another.

I had no problem with Garbology. It is a nickname in the Archeology and related communities for the study of kitchen middens and other places people put what we now call trash. Some MIT scientists actually studied the contents of modern land fills to figure out what people do with discarded electronics, for instance. The term has been in widespread use in the field for decades.

I also had no trouble figuring out what was going on with the FJ clue. The category gave me the fact that we were looking for a notable Brit. The first part of the clue gave me that we were looking for a someone who could be called Jo. But it would be too easy if the person was literally called Jo (or Joe) so it should be someone whose first name would be Jo-like. Finally, this person would most likely be a writer and female (a little “Little Women” sexism). There might have been other possibles but the only one that occurred to my feeble mind was J. K. Rowling. I didn’t remember what the “J” stood for. It could possibly have been something else. But since this was the only answer I could think of I went with what turned out to be the correct response.

  2. The first thing I studied when I got “the call” was this website. But once I was on stage, I made a carrying error and just went for broke. Doing the math at my desk and doing the math on stage are two very different things.

I think Jennifer should at least get an orange for her wager, since in her position she could not guard against a “small” wager from Russell without falling below Kyle’s cover bet if wrong (from that e-mail I sent you a few months ago this would be a “Type B” Stratton’s Dilemma game).

Finally having the guts to see this now. After what happened earlier that week (with a three-way $0 tie) it would make sense to not go for broke but I wasn’t thinking clearly and did it anyway. I wasn’t a fan of the clue either (big surprise, huh) and was thinking further back than contemporary authors. I was impressed Kyle got it. Thanks for the analysis!
