Laura “The Voice” Ashby is looking to stake her claim on the new Tournament of Champions leaderboard with a third win. Will she do it?

She’s in the driver’s seat – but she’s not as comfortable as she was yesterday.

Laura

Ashby

Julie

Adair

Molly

Hewitt

12,400 10,000 10,600

Various outlets have gotten wind of Laura’s vocal intonations and its effect on Twitter users, and the responses have been mostly of the head-slapping, cringe-worthy variety. A writer at Huffington Post tried to spin the response into a societal issue, while Barstool Sports suggested Laura be banned from the show.

Can’t win everyone over, I guess.

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:

THE OSCARS

First-order calculations

Julie’s in the best position if all three miss. Molly is in Stratton’s Dilemma.

Laura
Julie
Molly
12,400 10,000 10,600
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
8,800 6,400 9,400*
7,000

Second-order calculations

Molly and Julie could play some mind games. Laura should go for the lockout because anything smaller would put her at risk of falling to not one but two big wagers.

Laura
Julie
Molly
12,400 10,000 10,600
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
8,800 6,400 9,400*
5,200 5,800 7,000

Zero wagers

Score differences:
Laura and Molly: 1,800
Laura and Julie: 2,400
Molly and Julie: 600

Laura
Julie
Molly
12,400 10,000 10,600
FIRST-ORDER SECOND-ORDER COVER ZERO
min max min max min max
8,800 4,800 5,200 9,400*
6,400 5,800 7,000
1,800 600

Then we add a dollar to the minimum wagers, and subtract a dollar from the maximum wagers.

What actually happened

Laura Julie Molly
12,400 10,000 10,600
8,801 10,000 1,801
3,599 20,000 8,799
min max min max min max
8,801 4,801 5,199 10,600
6,399 5,801 6,999
1,799 599

I do not like Julie’s wager at all. I suppose given what Molly actually did, it was acceptable to some degree, but it’s good to assume your opponents are rational.

If Molly wanted to go small, she should have wagered no more than 599. There’s almost no chance Laura will wager zero, and you want to force your opponent to respond correctly to have a chance.

The Final Jeopardy! clue
