With the first half of the 2015 Tournament of Champions in the books, it’s time for three classic throw-downs: with no wild cards, it’s win or go home. Who will advance to the finals on Thursday and Friday?

ToC2015 semifinals

After Friday’s concluding quarterfinal, I tried my hand at predicting the semifinal match-ups. I started off well: obviously Matt Jackson and Alex Jacob were going to be in different games, and I correctly pegged Kerry Greene, the lone remaining super-champ after Greg Seroka’s loss, as the third seed.

I went awry by thinking the producers would place Catherine Hardee in Alex Jacob’s game. Alex was the sole survivor from the only all-male QF; if he advances and Kerry and Catherine do not, he will have played six males and zero females. I figured the producers would try to avoid that possibility.

Anyway, on to the predictions. Podium position is determined strictly by final score in the quarterfinals, with highest taking the champ’s spot. (For a full run-down of the tournament structure, check out my overview.)

Monday, November 16

Our first game pits Kerry Greene (Thursday’s winner) against the two bottom wild cards, John Schultz (Wednesday) and Dan Feitel (Monday). Kerry and John had similar Coryat scores in the quarters (14,800 vs. 14,400) while Dan needed a big wager in Final Jeopardy! to make it here.

Kerry was dominant on the buzzer in her game while John made his explode. He did manage to swipe two Daily Doubles from under Matt Jackson’s nose, however, so he knows how to play. I imagine he would have wagered big on that late Daily Double had wild cards not existed.

Prediction: Kerry and John have a shootout, while Dan could play spoiler in FJ!. Kerry gets Final right and moves on.

Tuesday, November 17

Alex Jacob (Friday’s winner) takes on Brennan Bushee (Tuesday’s winner) and Vaughn Winchell (the #2 wild card).

Vaughn started off our week with a bang, going toe-to-toe with Catherine Hardee in a high-scoring affair. Brennan had a weaker game the following night and eked out a victory in a tight match.

Alex was dominant on Friday, and I wonder what kind of score he could have amassed had he found more than one Daily Double. These big wagers could be his undoing, of course, but he has yet to trail entering Final and I have no reason to believe that will happen again. Brennan might need to keep his perfect Final streak alive if he wants to have a shot.

Prediction: Alex has it locked up heading into Final.

Wednesday, November 18

Matt Jackson (Wednesday’s winner) meets Andrew Haringer (#1 wild card) and Catherine Hardee (Monday’s winner).

Matt was strong in his quarterfinal but managed to find just one Daily Double, which could have cost him dearly at the late stage of Double Jeopardy! when John Schultz pulled the last one. Andrew had a much better performance than I had predicted, and Catherine was at the top of that gunfight with Vaughn Winchell.

I think this will be a closer match than the Tuesday game, and I actually think we could see an upset here.

Prediction: close game between Matt and Catherine; Matt takes the lead into Final but misses (his biggest weakness, in my opinion).

Who wins semifinal #3?
