04 Nov 1995: Yitzhak Rabin assassinated

On this day in 1995, Yitzhak Rabin, the prime minister of Israel, was assassinated during a peace rally.

  • the first Israeli PM to be born in Israel
  • led the Israeli army during the Six-Day War (1967)
  • member of the Labor Party
  • had a previous stint as PM, 1974-1977, succeeding Golda Meir
  • made peace deals with Yasser Arafat of Palestine (1993) and King Hussein of Jordan (1994)
    • after Rabin’s death, Hussein called him “a brother, a colleague and a friend”
