Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:

POP MUSIC HISTORY

Not too much we’ll need to calculate here, since Tom has Beth in a chokehold.

What actually happened

Sean Beth Tom
23,000 4,800 8,400
6,101 4,500 8,400
29,101 300 0
min max
6,199 3,601 800
2,401

Note: no one cares how many ‘points’ you have if you don’t win. All that matters is the extra $1,000 in your pocket.

Sean has now won 2 games and $48,300.

The Final Jeopardy! clue

POP MUSIC HISTORY
APPROPRIATELY, THIS 1984 BLOCKBUSTER WAS THE FIRST MUSIC CD MASS-PRODUCED IN THE UNITED STATES

I disagree with the analysis in Tom’s column. It seems to me his correct bet range is 801 to 7,200. This wins if he gets it right, no matter what Beth does including double up. But it also wins if both of them get it wrong, provided she bet at least 3,601 as she should (because he will have at least 1,200 left and she will not).

Indeed, if anyone should be told to bet everything it is Beth, since she cannot win without getting the answer right unless Tom bets stupidly.

In Tom’s shoes I would go low, with 801, since it is a subject I’m bad at.

    • Thanks for catching that – that was an issue with the formatting of my calculator. I meant to change that to 800 even.

What do you think?
