Always a good idea: watching Jeopardy! at the gym!The Final Wager – July 16, 2015

Jennifer was fun to watch, for the most part – but her goofiness (and her timid DD wager in a wordplay category) cost her a shot at putting this game away early.

Ben

Jennifer

Christianne

9,000 18,912 9,600

Luckily for her, Ben is out of it – assuming she wagers correctly, of course.

Of note:

Tonight’s Final Jeopardy! category is:

EUROPEAN NOVELISTS

That “12” at the end of Jennifer’s score would make me much more mad if these numbers weren’t so easy. Remember, we’re going to want to add a dollar to minimum scores and subtract a dollar from maximum scores.

First-order calculations

Second doubles up

If Christianne doubles her score, she’ll have 19,200.

To cover this all-in wager, Jennifer will need to wager 288.

Ben
Jennifer
Christianne
9,000 18,912 9,600
288 9,600
19,200 19,200
min max min max min max
288

An incorrect response with that wager will leave Jennifer with 18,624.

To get above her total, Christianne must wager at least 9,024. Might as well go for everything.

288 9,024
18,624 18,624
min max min max min max
288 9,024*

A successful doubling will put Ben at 18,000.

Jennifer could wager at most 912.

18,000 18,000 18,000

288 912 9,024*

Then we make our adjustments.

What actually happened

Ben Jennifer Christianne

9,000 288 9,600

289 911 9,600

Well, we missed a great opportunity to see a tiebreaker, for no good reason. If you’re going to enter Final Jeopardy! with a weird amount, make sure you know what you’re doing!

We’ll see if Jennifer has any energy left for tomorrow’s game… my hunch is she will.
