Regular season finale: Daily analysis, Friday, July 18

We’re entering the final game of the regular season with yet another one-time champion. Will she repeat to end the year? The Final Wager – July 18, 2014

She’s not in great shape, but she’s still alive.

Katie Wroblewski: 4,800
Jeff Filippini: 10,300
Winston Nguyen: 13,400

The Final Jeopardy! category: FAMOUS HOMES

I’m having a relaxing beach weekend, so the video will be up later. For now, the written version.

Basic strategy – first vs. second

Winston should wager 7,200 to cover Jeff.

If he’s wrong, he’ll have 6,200, so Jeff should cap his wager at 4,100, and Katie should wager everything since she needs to get it right.

Basic strategy – second vs. third

Jeff should cap his wager at 700 to stay above Katie. This puts him into a dilemma similar to what we saw in Tuesday’s game: stay above third no matter what? Or cover a zero wager by first?

Basic strategy – Rule #3

On the larger side, Jeff should wager at least 3,100 to cover a zero wager by Winston.

Mind games – first vs. second

If Jeff wagers 4,100, Winston can cover him with a wager of 1,000.

If Jeff wagers 700, Winston can guarantee a victory with a wager of up to 2,400.

If he’s right with that wager, he’ll have 15,800 – so Jeff could wager at least 5,500. Of course, at that point, he might as well wager everything, since he won’t win if he’s wrong.

What actually happened

Jeff’s 2,101 was savvy – he was anticipating that 1,000 wager out of Winston – but it fails to cover a zero wager, so it gets the pink. I have no idea what Winston was thinking here, but now he has the WHOLE SUMMER to learn about wagering!

Two weeks left, and they’re devoted to the teens. We’ll see you on Monday!

The link in your email is wrong. The day-of-month is 19 when it should be 18. And I think Josh Woo is right.

What do you think?
