Daily analysis, Monday, July 7

After a nice long weekend, it appears tonight’s players are intent on ratcheting up my blood pressure. The Final Wager - July 7, 2014

Video will be up around 10:30 p.m. EDT.

After some back-and-forth play and a lot of silence amongst our three players, we have a triple-five-digit game. Let’s dig in.

Kay Thanaporn: 10,600
Robyn Stone: 11,200
Justin Nigro: 14,000

The Final Jeopardy! category: GOVERNMENT

Justin will want to abstain from mind games; no reason to assume both opponents will be rational.

Basic strategy – first vs. second

Justin should wager 8,400.

Robyn can wager up to 5,600, and Kay can wager up to 5,000.

Basic strategy – second vs. third

Robyn should wager 10,000 to cover Kay – but in that case, she’ll lose if she’s wrong, so she might as well wager everything.

Basic strategy – Rule #3

Kay should wager 1,200 to cover an “unsafe” wager by Robyn.

Robyn should wager at least 2,800 on the off chance Justin wagers zero.

Mind games

Justin should stay away from this. 8,400 or bust.

Robyn might wager 4,400 if she thinks Kay will be cheeky with the 5,000 wager.

Kay should cap her wager at 3,800 to compensate for this.

What actually happened

No no no no no. Ladies! Ironically, Justin wins by virtue of being the only player to wager properly.

NOTE: Robyn has exactly 4/5 of Justin’s score, but Kay renders any wagering to tie moot.
