Daily analysis, Friday, June 6

Thanks to tonight’s game, you’ll get to double your pleasure with two doses of The Final Wager! The Final Wager - June 6, 2014

Vince got a rare Penultimate Wager. I put up a separate post with my analysis of that situation.

Here are our scores heading into Final.

Molly Lalonde: 13,600
Kathy Haas: 11,600
Vince Balzano: 10,400

The Final Jeopardy! category: 20th CENTURY AMERICANS

This one’s tricky, so let’s take our time.

Basic strategy – first vs. second

Molly should wager 9,600 to cover Kathy.

Kathy can wager up to 7,600 to win on the double-miss; for Vince, that number is 6,400.

Basic strategy – second vs. third

Kathy should wager 9,200 to cover Vince. This will put her below Molly if both ladies miss, however, so she has no chance of winning if she’s wrong; an all-in wager is advisable.

Vince should keep his maximum at 6,400.

Basic strategy – Rule #3

Vince should wager at least 3,200 to cover a zero wager by both of his opponents, and 6,400 to cover “unsafe” wagers.

But that’s his maximum wager, as well, so we have a strange wager-to-tie situation.

The algebra, for those interested, is not something you ever need to know, and in fact I had to write it out:

C – (2B – A) = 2(A – C)
or
A = 2B – C

I’m not as sold on this one because a “Rule #3 continued” wager isn’t hard-and-fast, particularly in a situation where neither first nor second has a real reason to wager for that total.

Mind games

Molly ought to wager for 9,600 exactly. She might also wager 5,600 if she thinks both Kathy and Vince will wager to stay above her total, but this is really unlikely.

Kathy might wager 5,200 or more to cover Vince’s “small” wager.

In the end, Vince went too large, and it cost him the game on the triple-stumper. Molly picks up “just” 3,600, but much more importantly, the right to play again Monday. She’s a good player – can she keep her streak alive?

This is the second time recently when I have clicked on the video and received a “this video is unavailable”. What’s going on?

    • I usually publish the post before the video is fully uploaded (for some reason, this takes a while with my connection), then embed the link so I don’t have to think about it. It should be up now. Sorry about that!

What do you think?
