Daily analysis, Monday, June 2

Julia is looking for 21. But will one of her challengers pull an ace?The Final Wager - June 2, 2014

For the first time in over four weeks, Julia trails heading into Final. It’s a close one, though, and Debra could play spoiler.

Julia Collins: 11,000
Debra Walsh: 5,200
Brian Loughnane: 12,600

The Final Jeopardy! category: OSCAR-WINNING WRITERS

Things are going to get interesting – technically, this is an obscure wager-to-tie situation, but I’m not going to pay all that much attention to it because it requires a lot of moving parts.

Basic strategy – first vs. second

Brian should wager 9,400 to take his destiny into his own hands.

Julia can wager up to 7,800, and can wager 1,600 or 3,200 to cover zero and “unsafe” wagers by Brian.

Debra should cap her wager at 2,000.

Basic strategy – second vs. third

Julia can wager up to 600 to stay above Debra regardless.

Mind games

Julia might want to cover those small wagers by Brian, therefore capping her bet at 3,800 to stay above a 2,000 wager by Debra.

Julia has rational wagers that will force Debra to get it right to have a shot, so Debra might want to wager everything.

Brian might wager 2,200 to cover Julia’s 3,800 wager, which would put him into a tie if he’s wrong and Debra doubles up (this is why it’s a wager-to-tie situation). On the other hand, he could wager up to 1,000 if he thinks Julia’s going for the 600 wager.

Thanks for a great run, Julia! Congrats – we’ll see you in the TOC.
