Battle of the Decades – knockout rounds
Quarterfinals Semifinals Finals

preliminary round

After tonight, our field of semifinalists will be set. Chuck Forrest, Mark Dawson, and Colby Burnett look to punch their ticket to the party.

Here’s my preview.The Final Wager - May 9, 2014

What a fantastic game to round out our quarterfinals.

Chuck Forrest: 14,400
Mark Dawson: 10,600
Colby Burnett: 11,800

The Final Jeopardy! category: FAMOUS BOOKS

As with the previous quarterfinals, we don’t know what each player considers a “good” wild card score. Let’s take a look at some potential wagers.

(Now that I re-read it, you might just want to watch the video instead, once it’s up!)

I’m going to assume that Chuck will wager 9,201 to take the win into his own hands, as he has done almost every single time in the past.

To stay above him, Colby can wager up to 6,600, and Mark can wager up to 5,400.

Remember that in his preliminary game, faced with a similar category, Colby made an “unsafe” wager to stay above Celeste DiNucci’s pre-Final score. To cover this possibility, Mark might consider wagering 2,400.

If Chuck is, for some reason, feeling conservative, he could wager up to 2,599 to win on a triple stumper, and up to 1,400 to also stay above that “unsafe” Colby wager. And finally, to cover that 6,600 out of Colby, Chuck could risk 4,001.

Colby could also consider 4,201 to cover Mark’s maximum 5,400 wager.

PHEW! And that’s just my analysis – each player could do something wildly different depending on his view of the wild-card cut-off.

All three players kept things on the small side, although it’s amusing to think that had Mark and Colby responded correctly and Chuck missed, they would have played a tiebreaker. It would have been moot, since the loser would have claimed the fourth wild card, but it would have really brought the day to a humongous climax!

I’ll put up a preview post on Sunday, but for now, here are your semifinal match-ups (wild cards have an asterisk):

Mon, May 12 Ken Jennings Russ Schumacher Chuck Forrest
Tue, May 13 Brad Rutter Tom Cubbage* Leszek Pawlowicz*
Wed, May 14 Roger Craig Pam Mueller* Colby Burnett*

I can’t wait to see what happens!
