Daily analysis, Wednesday, April 9

Is anyone else surprised that Alex didn’t mention that our players’ last names (sort of) rhyme?

Another tight game. Our champ is struggling but still in contention.

Derrick Shivar: 6,800
Sandie Baker: 12,400
Ed Hagar: 15,900

The Final Jeopardy! category: AROUND THE USA

Once again, a complicated situation.

Basic strategy

Ed should wager 8,900 to cover Sandie.

Sandie should wager no more than 5,400 to stay above Ed on a double-miss, and at least 3,500 to cover a zero wager by him (this will also cover a double-up by Derrick).

Derrick has to get it right, so he might as well wager everything.

Mind games

If Ed thinks Sandie will go for the conservative amount (no more than 5,400), he could wager 1,900. This is a compelling wager: it not only forces Sandie to get it right, it also eliminates Derrick from contention.

If she’s worried about this possibility, Sandie could wager everything, since she’ll lose anyway if she gets it wrong with a bigger wager.

Going by that round number, you’ll have a tough time convincing me Sandie knew what she was doing here – but she’s the champ, and that’s all that matters. We’ll see if she does better in my book tomorrow.

The Final Jeopardy! clue for April 9, 2014 (AROUND THE USA):

THE MAYO CLINIC MILE IS A WALKING PATH THAT FEATURES 1 MILE, 5K & 10K ROUTES WITHIN THIS STRUCTURE

Correct response: What is The Mall of America?

The daily double “answer” Derrick “missed” was wrongly worded. His answer of “Arizona” was more correct than UNM. The UNM is to the EAST of the “Banks of the Rio Grande”….Jeopardy staff altered a quote from the UNM website that described Albuquerque (not UNM) and totally screwed up: Here’s the actual wording without the screw up: From the magnificent mesas to the west, past the banks of the historic Rio Grande to the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque is a blend of culture and cuisine…Note that leaving out “PAST” and “TO” and making the subject UNM instead of Albuquerque completely alters the factual issue. And by losing everything early on, his game was wrongly sabotaged.

What do you think?
