Two more TOC champions return to battle a four-timer who did well in the Million Dollar Masters.

Dave AbbottDave Abbott won the 1999 Tournament of Champions, with three of his regular victories coming in pre-Final locks. A man after my own heart, he gave the potential to tie in four of those games – all except the fifth, inexplicably. In one case, he had an evenly-spaced scores scenario, which I used in one of my practice situations. He had a large lead heading into Final in the UTOC but missed. He has been aggressive in some wagering scenarios where he didn’t need to be.

I highly recommend reading Dave’s anecdote on J! Archive.

Mark DawonMark Dawson won the 2003 Tournament of Champions. Longtime fans will criticize me if I fail to mention that he only did so because Brian Weikle (the alternate for this Battle of the Decades week) under-wagered by $200, but that downplays the strong performance Mark put forth in that tournament. He did benefit from a fearful wager out of the leader in his first appearance and held back in third place in his fourth game.

Claudia PerryClaudia Perry won her four games in the first matches of 1997, and ran into the double buzz-saws of Dan Melia and Fred Ramen in the TOC semifinals. She’s been a bit too aggressive at times (game five, the Million Dollar Masters semifinal) and too passive at others (a strange wager from first in one of her regular games, which coincidentally would have beaten her second-place opponent by a dollar).

Prediction:

My gut says Dave, since he’s had the more dominant career on paper, but Mark will likely better handle the tougher boards. I expect it will be a gunfight between these two with the game coming down to the wire.

Dave had locks in his first, fourth, and fifth games, and wagered for the tie in the first and fourth had he gotten Final wrong.

In Dave’s TOC semifinal, shouldn’t the minimum recommended wager be 1,401 (since it’s a tournament) and the maximum 2,499 (to force Dan to be right to have a chance)?

He wagered 3100to get to the roundness of 10000
