Daily analysis, Friday, January 10

It’s another episode at the gym! Surely that bodes well for the wagers, right? The Final Wager - January 10, 2014

Here’s an anecdote that doubles as a shameless plug: I recently wrote an article in the New York Times about a guy who collects antique steam whistles. One of his great projects was building a calliope, which is basically a pipe organ that runs on steam.

When I was writing the article, to gather inspiration, I listened to an album on Spotify called (I kid you not) Circus Calliope, Vol. 2. I almost put one of the tracks on tonight’s video, because what we have here, even before Final, is a freakin’ carousel of champions. Five in one week. And I had high hopes for Seth, too!

(You can watch my video of the whistles and the calliope here.)

Anyway, let’s get down to business.

Seth Tribble: 6,800
Michelle DeGrothy: 14,600
Adrian Ho: 3,500

The Final Jeopardy! category: COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

Well, Michelle is safe so long as she stays at 1,000 or above. See ya on Monday! (Unless…)

Seth should wager exactly 200. Remember, he’ll finish in second place if he ties with Adrian, since Seth started Final ahead.

Adrian might as well wager everything, but at a minimum, he should wager at least 3,101.

OK, before I tear him apart, Adrian deserves some props on that Penultimate Wager. He risked finishing with a negative score and missing out on FJ! for a shot at second place. It’s too bad he couldn’t finish the job with a proper Final Wager!

The Final Jeopardy! clue for January 10, 2014 (COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD):

Here, I want to point out that on a recent “Think Different” quiz I hosted on Jboard, one of the clues was: “Name a capital city that has been the seat of power of a female President at some point in the last five years (since January 1, 2009).”

This is how you get good at Jeopardy! – by playing games like this, as pointless as they might seem.

Correct response: What is Argentina? (Cristina Fernández de Kirchner)
