Daily analysis, December 9

We’ve got a strong champion kicking off our new week. How will things go?

With one clue left to play, we’ve got these scores:

Craig Cornish Jr.: 26,400
Murray Weiss: -1,800
Reem Fattouh: 13,400

Reem has the Daily Double. What should she do?

There are only two options.

If you are really really super confident you’re going to get this one right, you wager 13,000 to try to pull into a tie with Craig. This will give you both the option to wager either 0 or everything in Final. My hunch is with that much money on the line, both players will be content to stand pat.

Daily Double December 9, 2013 - even scores

But if you have ANY DOUBTS about the clue and would rather take your chances with a random Final Jeopardy!, OR you think Craig might be a wild man who would wager 26,400 in Final, you get into a “lock-tie” scenario: one where you have exactly half of Craig’s score. This forces Craig to wager zero and you’ll be back the next day if you get Final correct. So bet 200 and tank the clue to get to 13,200.

Daily Double December 9, 2013 - lock-tie

Instead, Reem went for 2,000, which has no upside and a ton of downside. She got it wrong and locked herself out of contention. (The hypothetical lock-tie possibility was rendered moot when she missed Final, but that’s beside the point.)

Look. You spend your entire life wanting to be on Jeopardy!. You try out a few times, and you finally get The Call. You take weeks learning all of the minutiae your brain can absorb.

But if you don’t invest even five minutes to think about what might happen in situation like this, I have no problem getting angry with you.

In the end, it’s your Jeopardy! career, not mine. I’m just trying to help you make the most of it.

The Final Jeopardy! clue for December 9, 2013:

U.S. PRESIDENTS
ALTHOUGH BORN IN THE UNITED STATES, HE WAS THE ONLY PRESIDENT WHO SPOKE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Correct response: Who was Martin van Buren?
