Daily analysis, December 2

Let’s see if I’m feeling chilly about the wagers this first game of December. The Final Wager cover December 2, 2013

Once again, Steven is leading by 100 going into Final. This time, he had a Penultimate Wager, with which he could have done a better job (he wagered just 100 with a lead of 200). More on that later, perhaps.

Steven Durham: 15,700
Scott Claremon: 11,800
Maura DeGreene: 15,600

Analysis

Steven should wager 15,500.

Maura should wager 8,000 to cover Scott, and no more than 15,400 so as not to fall below Steven.

Scott should wager between 3,900 (to cover zeroes by our top two) and 4,200 (to stay above Maura if she’s wrong).

Maura can play some mind games here: if thinks Scott will wager “rationally”, she might go for just 400 to lock him out. An interesting play, it would have given her the victory here.

THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T TALK ABOUT WAGERING IN THE GREEN ROOM! Let people assume you’re going to wager stupidly.

Also, regarding FJ!: who the hell?

The Final Jeopardy! clue for December 2, 2013:

POP GROUPS
IN 2012, 22 YEARS AFTER THEIR FIRST ALBUM, THEY RELEASED A NEW ONE THAT INCLUDES “GOOD VIBRATIONS” AND “MONDAY MONDAY”

Correct response: Who is Wilson Phillips? No, really – who are they? I’ve never heard of them. Well, obviously I’ve heard of their fathers …

Wilson Phillips are the offspring of both The Mamas and the Papas and the Beach Boys. Somehow my mom got a hold of their debut album and was playing it incessantly in the car one summer. Wouldn’t have helped me on FJ!, but I didn’t have quite the “Who the hell?” kind of reaction you did.

Eagle-eyed game show fans will also note that one of their number, Carnie Wilson, hosted The Newlywed Game for GSN before Sherri Shepherd took over.

I don’t know if you highlighted the correct answer in the post, but I did a bit of editorializing. :)

What do you think?
